Dehumidify your basement.
Often times basements are predominantly underground, causing moisture build-up that is both unhealthy & dirty. There are four common methods to fighting the moisture:
1. Install an exterior wall exhaust fan & separate intake louver/damper that will present cross ventilation to dry out the air.
2. Install a heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system that includes a filtered air handler w/ ductwork that essentially performs similar to option #1, but is more efficient.
3. Install a portable dehumidifier.
4. Install the Lennox Humiditrol central air conditioning / dehumidification system that utilizes more pinpoint controls, high efficient air conditioning & dehumidification equipment & ductwork.
Any of the options can be accomplished by one of our factory trained salesmen & technicians.

The myth w/ higher SEER.
Many folks feel that by installing higher SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio (or rating)) equipment they will automatically see higher efficiency & lower utility costs. This could not be further from the truth if the system is not sized, designed, installed & maintained properly. An ideally installed 10-12 SEER system is more efficient than an oversized, poorly installed & never maintained 15-21 SEER system.
Systems need to per sized per each application, have proper ductwork design & installation, & be routinely serviced. Without those components, there is no efficient system.

Panasonic offers quiet & efficient bathroom exhaust fans.
Whether it be a residential or commercial application, bathroom exhaust systems are very important in the removal of moisture. Although it is often times typical, excessive noise from a bathroom fan is not necessary. Panasonic offers a great line of low sone bathroom exhaust fans that we have been installing for a number of years now. Ensure your fan is ducted to an outside wall & not just into the attic dumping moisture onto your insulation.

The importance of planned maintenance on your heating & air conditioning systems.
This is the time of year when you will mostly likely feel the effects of not having your hvac systems routinely maintained. The hot & humid weather will put much pressure onto a system if its has not had its restricted filters replaced or washed, electrical connections & refrigerant pressures checked & any oil or grease necessary on the motors.
Dirty filters restrict air flow & apply pressure against the fan motors which will increase your utility bills & destroy the motor. Loose electrical connections can stop the operation of the condenser fan motor & could destroy the most expensive component - the compressor - the heart of the system. Low refrigerant levels will not produce the needed air conditioning your space requires.
Like your vehicle requires routine oil changes & maintenance, so too does your hvac system. Similar maintenance goes for the heating months. Bitter cold weather will also bring out the flaws in your system @ the most inopportune time due to lack of routine maintenance.
Contact our service manager Bruce Battis @ bruce@mjhayward.com or call 603.298.6981 or 603526.6331 for a scheduled maintenance or estimate.

Thermostat settings & efficiency.
Everyone's comfort level differs from one another. Most preferred air conditioning temperatures range from 70-74 F. The thermostat should never be set below 68 F as the freezing up of the air conditioning coil while most likely occur.
Also, as the outdoor ambient temperature rises, do not necessarily expect the indoor temperature to maintain more than a 15-20 F difference. This means that if the outdoor temperature is 95 F, expect the indoor temperature to range 75-80 F. We design the systems per the industry ASHRAE standard of 15-20 F temperature difference. Many systems may handle more of a temperature difference depending on the design & customer preference during the design phase.
The installation of programmable thermostats is a wise choice for energy efficiency. It is not necessary to keep your thermostat set to 70-72 F all day long while you are away from work to maintain a dehumidified & relatively cool house. You can set the daily program to ramp up the set temperature when you leave for work or wherever & have the setting drop within one-hour prior to arriving back home.
Also, it is recommended to keep the air conditioning system operating. If you shut the air conditioner down for the entire day while you are away, it will work that much harder @ the end of the day to remove the humidity & heat from inside your home. Similar to starting your vehicle, when the air conditioning system has to be started back up, that is when it uses the most energy & work. Setting the programmable thermostat is the preferred energy usage savings method.

...and just to knock us down a bit more while we're all trying to get back up, syndicated news analysts reported yesterday that vehicle fuel could rise up to $7.00/gal by year's end.

Be prepared for the 2010 R-22 refrigerant manufacturing phaseout.
By 2010, the common R-22 air conditioning refrigerant will be phased out from production & like old refrigerants, such as R-12, that have already been phased out, will too become quite expensive. The common alternative refrigerant that we have been installing since the later '90s is the chlorine-free R-410A. It is environmentally friendly to the atmosphere & higher in efficiency. All air conditioning system manufacturers are offering R-410A systems.
Retrofitting an R-22 system to an R-410A system is fairly easy, but often times more than just the equipment needs to be replaced. The piping frequently must be replaced too, to facilitate the R-410A system.
Please contact our svc mgr Bruce Battis (bruce@mjhayward.com) or one our estimators John Chaloux (john@mjhayward.com) & Justin Hayward (justin@mjhayward.com) or 603.298.6981 & 603.526.6331 for a free consultation & estimate.

Space heater pose safety concern.
Here is a recent news post from http://www.wcax.com/:
Burlington, Vermont - June 26, 2008
Vermont utilities hope customers won't rely on electric heaters this winter, fearing bills could get out of hand and the heaters could tax the electrical grid. But there's also a safety concern.
The utilities say heaters can pose a fire hazard; they can overheat and should never be left near combustible items. Officials also say to turn the space heaters down when you leave the house or go to bed.
"We really urge people to read the manuals, supervise children," said Steve Costello of Central Vermont Public Service. "They do get hot and easy to knock over and start fires. That's a big issue."
Experts say the best way to keep your home heating costs down is to make sure windows and doors have tight seals and that ceilings and walls are well-insulated.

Breath of fresh air.
The more efficient & tighter homes & commercial spaces are built, the more they need assistance in breathing to provide fresh air to the occupants, eliminate moisture & odors & filter indoor particulates. Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) & energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) are great solutions to providing fresh air to a space.

Steam humidification the most effective for residence or commercial space.
We have seen a dramatic increase in the demand for higher quality residential & commercial humidification than the typical plastic rotating box & foam rotating filter attached to the hot air furnace's plenum. Steam humidification provides better comfort & more precise control. Nortec is a common manufacturer we sell & install:

Lennox Humiditrol actually dehumidifies your home & place of business.
The Lennox Humiditrol system is a great component to add-on to your ducted heating & air conditioning system. It is not everday that you need air conditioning, but frequently find your space w/ unwanted humidity. An air conditioning system will not continue to dehumidify your space if it reaches the set temperature on your thermostat but there is high humidity. The Humiditrol continues to operate even if the air conditioning component cycles off to reach your desired relative humidity.

Geothermal - energy efficient hvac.
Geothermal hvac, both residential & commercial, taps into the earth's energy source to provide a cleaner method in indoor climate control. By drilling wells, setting a slinky tubing system in the shallow earth's surface or tapping into a pond or lake, geothermal energy will save you on your utility bills & provide for a more environmentally friendly hvac system. MJH is ready to provide you with a free estimate to cleaner living. Please feel free to visit our "Geothermal Manufacturer's" links.
Roto-Brush vacuum is the answer to dirty ductwork.
It is important for both your health & the efficiency of the hot air or cooling system to have clean ductwork. Our Roto-Brush ductwork vacuum cleaner with video camera allows us to navigate through your ductwork & remove the dirt, duct & mites. We spend a high percentage of our time indoors & the cleanliness of the air we breathe is important. Ductwork restriction will also increase your utility bills by applying too much restriction on the fan motor. Here is a link to Roto-Brush:
